Fairtrade coffee is coffee certified by Fairtrade International (FLO) to meet specific standards for minimum prices paid to producers, community development premiums, sustainable farming practices, and democratic farmer cooperative governance. When coffee carries the Fairtrade mark, it means the farmers received at least the Fairtrade Minimum Price (set above market commodity prices) plus an additional Fairtrade Premium that goes to community projects chosen by the farmer cooperative.
This guide explains how Fairtrade certification works, how it differs from Direct Trade and Specialty Coffee, why Coffee Star chose Puro Fairtrade & Organic for our 114+ Auto-Barista locations, and how you can verify a Fairtrade claim.
What Fairtrade certification actually requires
For coffee to be sold as Fairtrade-certified, the supply chain must meet strict criteria audited by FLOCERT, the independent certification body for Fairtrade International:
- Minimum price guarantee — Farmers receive at least the Fairtrade Minimum Price (USD 1.80 per pound for washed Arabica, as of 2024), even when market prices fall
- Fairtrade Premium — An additional USD 0.20 per pound goes to the cooperative for community-chosen projects (schools, healthcare, processing equipment)
- Democratic cooperative structure — Farmers must be organised in cooperatives that vote on Premium spending
- No forced or child labour — Strict ILO conventions enforced
- Environmental standards — Restrictions on agrochemicals, soil and water conservation requirements
- Pre-financing — Buyers must offer up to 60% pre-financing of contracts on request
- Long-term trading relationships — Encouraged over spot market transactions
Fairtrade vs Direct Trade vs Specialty Coffee
| Standard | Certified by | Minimum price | Community premium | Audited |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fairtrade | FLOCERT (independent) | Yes (set globally) | Yes (USD 0.20/lb) | Annually |
| Direct Trade | Self-declared by roaster | Negotiated | Variable | Roaster-led |
| Specialty Coffee | SCA (cup score 80+) | None | None | Cup quality only |
| Organic (USDA / EU) | USDA / EU certifiers | None | None | Annually |
| Rainforest Alliance | Rainforest Alliance | None | Variable | Annually |
Key takeaway: Fairtrade is the only certification that guarantees a minimum price to farmers regardless of market conditions. Direct Trade can be excellent — but it relies on the integrity of individual roasters, with no third-party audit.
How to verify a Fairtrade claim
- Look for the Fairtrade mark — The black, blue, and green logo, with a unique licence number
- Check the FLOCERT database — Visit FLOCERT customer search and verify the brand is listed
- Verify the supply chain — Reputable Fairtrade brands disclose their cooperative origins (which farms, in which countries)
- Beware “Fair Trade” without the certification mark — Some brands use the term loosely. The official Fairtrade mark is the only verifiable claim
Why Coffee Star uses Puro Fairtrade & Organic
Coffee Star exclusively serves Puro® Coffee across our 114+ Auto-Barista Machines in Malaysia and our expansion into Saudi Arabia. Puro is a Fairtrade & Organic certified brand from Miko Koffie NV — the oldest coffee roaster in Belgium, established in 1801.
We chose Puro because it lets us deliver three things simultaneously:
- World-class taste — 220+ years of Belgian roasting heritage
- Verified ethical sourcing — Fairtrade certification audited annually by FLOCERT
- Rainforest conservation — Every kilogram of Puro sold funds rainforest protection through World Land Trust
The result: when you buy a coffee from a Coffee Star Auto-Barista, the farmer received a guaranteed minimum price, the cooperative received a community premium, the roaster has been operating since 1801, and a portion goes to rainforest conservation. That’s not a marketing claim — it’s an audited supply chain.
The Miko Koffie NV story (Belgium, 1801)
Miko Koffie NV is one of the oldest continuously operating coffee houses in the world. Founded in 1801 in Turnhout, Belgium, by Joannes Verbeeck, the company has been roasting coffee for over 220 years. Today, Miko produces Puro Fairtrade & Organic for distribution across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia — including Coffee Star’s 114+ Malaysian Auto-Barista locations.
Miko’s Puro brand was specifically created to combine Fairtrade certification with conservation impact through the World Land Trust partnership. Every kilogram of Puro sold protects approximately one square metre of rainforest in Sierra Gorda, Mexico, or Cerro La Grada, Honduras.
Common questions about Fairtrade coffee
Is Fairtrade coffee more expensive? Marginally, at the wholesale level. The Fairtrade Premium adds about USD 0.20 per pound to producer cost. At the retail cup level, the difference is typically RM 0.10–0.30 per cup — invisible to most consumers.
Is Fairtrade the same as Organic? No. Fairtrade is about producer welfare and fair trading practices. Organic is about agricultural methods (no synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, GMOs). Coffee can be Fairtrade-only, Organic-only, both, or neither. Puro Coffee at Coffee Star is both Fairtrade AND Organic.
Does Fairtrade certification work? Multiple academic studies have shown Fairtrade improves household income for participating farmers, increases school enrolment in coffee-growing communities, and supports cooperative resilience during market downturns. It’s not perfect, but it’s the most rigorous third-party certification standard for ethical sourcing currently available.
Can I get Fairtrade coffee in Malaysia? Yes. Coffee Star’s 114+ Auto-Barista Machines across Peninsular Malaysia all serve Puro Fairtrade & Organic coffee. You can also purchase Puro Fairtrade beans for home brewing through our marketplace.
