Dear friend,
It started with a cup of coffee. Not a cup I drank — but one I served.
It was 2:47 a.m. in a transit lounge between Kuala Lumpur and Manchester. The cleaner — an aunty in her fifties — offered me kopi from her own thermos because the airport vendor had closed. She had noticed me pacing for hours.
I was a graduate engineering student in Portsmouth. Burnt out, far from home, quietly questioning whether the path I had chosen made sense. That cup cost her time, money and energy she did not have to spare. But she gave it freely, with the grace that defines so many of us back home.
I never forgot it.
Years later — after a career in oil & gas, civil engineering and project management — I kept circling back to that moment. Not because of the coffee, but because of what it represented: dignity through small acts. Care, woven into ordinary work. Hospitality as a quiet form of love.
When COVID-19 hit and our frontline staff carried unimaginable weight, I asked myself: what if we could scale that aunty’s gift?
That question became Coffee Star.
We built it patiently, and on purpose.
We partnered with Miko Koffie NV — Belgium’s oldest coffee roaster, founded in 1801. The family behind Puro® Fairtrade & Organic coffee. We brought their 225-year heritage to Malaysia — certified Halal, with full transparency on origin and farmer wages.
I engineered the machines. Coffee Star’s Auto-Barista platform is IoT-connected — every cup tracked, every machine self-diagnosing, every refill predictive rather than reactive. We do not sell coffee. We deliver a service that works quietly while you do everything else.
But this is not really a coffee company.
We are a Bumiputera-led ESG company that uses coffee as our medium. 5% of every cup goes to a public-good fund. Used coffee grounds become Bean2Blossom organic compost for partner urban farms. We are a United Nations Global Compact participant (ID 153705) and a 2026 SME ESG Challenge winner.
Every cup is, in a small way, a vote for Fairtrade farmers, organic supply chains, urban farming in Klang Valley, and dignity for that aunty in the airport.
So here is my letter. Not a marketing pitch.
If you care about the small rituals that hold our days together — let us build something thoughtful together. Not a cheaper machine. A service that works without anyone noticing, until the day they do.
