Bean2Blossom: From Coffee Grounds to Organic Compost

Every cup of coffee leaves something behind. Open the grounds drawer of an Auto-Barista after the morning rush and you will find it: a dark, damp cake of spent coffee. In most offices it goes straight into the bin and on to landfill, joining the mountain of spent grounds the world’s coffee industry discards every year. A single Auto-Barista in a busy office fills that drawer again and again, week after week. Across more than 114 Coffee Star locations, that is a lot of organic material sitting idle.

Bean2Blossom is what the Coffee Star team decided to do about it. It is a circular economy programme: spent grounds are collected from the nationwide Auto-Barista network and turned into organic compost for urban farming, landscaping and community greening. The work earned Coffee Star the title of National Winner, SME ESG Challenge 2025/2026 (SME Corp Malaysia × UN Global Compact Network Malaysia, Brunei & Cambodia) for Bean2Blossom.

How Bean2Blossom works

  1. Collection — Used coffee grounds extracted from each Coffee Star Auto-Barista during regular service visits across our 114+ Peninsular Malaysia locations
  2. Aggregation — Grounds consolidated at our Shah Alam HQ before transport to composting partners
  3. Composting — Through controlled aerobic decomposition, spent grounds converted into nutrient-rich organic compost over 6–8 weeks
  4. Distribution — Finished compost supplied to urban farms, school gardens, mosque landscaping projects, and municipal greening initiatives
  5. Reporting — Volumes and impact metrics tracked and reported as part of Coffee Star UN Global Compact (UNGC ID 153705) participation

Why coffee grounds make exceptional compost

The science is on the gardener’s side. Spent coffee grounds are nitrogen-rich, around 2% nitrogen by dry weight, and settle to a near-neutral pH once composted. They carry magnesium, potassium and phosphorus, the three macronutrients plants need most. Composted properly, they also improve soil structure, hold water better and feed microbial activity.

There is a bonus. Composted grounds suppress certain plant pathogens, notably Pythium and Fusarium fungi, which makes the finished compost especially valuable for growing vegetables and flowers.

Why we built Bean2Blossom

When Coffee Star started in 2020, the team made itself a promise: ESG would be built into operations, not bolted on as marketing. Every machine, after all, is a small organic-waste generator. So the question was never whether to do something with the grounds. It was how to do it at scale, count it, and keep the benefit in Malaysia.

Bean2Blossom answers all three:

  • Scale — 114+ Auto-Barista locations generate enough grounds to make collection commercially viable
  • Measurable — Every kilogram of grounds diverted is a kilogram out of landfill, tracked in our reporting
  • Local benefit — Finished compost goes to Malaysian urban farms and community projects, not export

Recognition

  • National Winner, SME ESG Challenge 2025/2026 (SME Corp Malaysia × UN Global Compact Network Malaysia, Brunei & Cambodia) for Bean2Blossom
  • Featured on TV9 Borak SeeNI — National television feature on the Coffee Star ESG initiative
  • Personal recognition by Minister Steven Sim at the SME Corp Bean2Blossom showcase
  • Aligned with UN SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land)

What is next: MyCelium

Compost is only the first stage of a wider circular economy plan. The next, now in development, is MyCelium: using spent coffee grounds as the substrate for growing gourmet mushrooms. Coffee grounds are a proven medium for oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) and other species, and they give a significantly higher nutritional yield from the same substrate than the compost route alone.

The team is building MyCelium as a partnership programme with B40 community groups. Coffee Star brings the substrate, the training and the buy-back agreement; the households bring the growing. The aim: mushroom cultivation as a viable income stream for participating households. Yesterday’s coffee, next season’s harvest.

How to participate

Urban farms and landscaping projects in Malaysia keen to receive Bean2Blossom compost can email talktous@coffeestar.my with the subject “Bean2Blossom Compost Partnership”.

Hosts of Coffee Star Auto-Barista machines are already part of Bean2Blossom. There is nothing extra to set up; the grounds are collected during routine service visits.

Community organisations interested in a MyCelium pilot can email talktous@coffeestar.my with the subject “MyCelium Community Pilot”. The grounds are already there. What grows from them is up to whoever asks.
