Coffee Star wins SME ESG Challenge award for composting coffee grounds
The Shah Alam office-coffee company takes a RM100,000 media-value package as one of three SME ESG Challenge national winners for its Bean2Blossom composting programme.

KUALA LUMPUR, 30 January 2026 — Coffee Star, a Shah Alam office-coffee company, has won a national ESG award from SME Corp Malaysia and the UN Global Compact’s Malaysian network for composting spent coffee grounds.
The prize, a media-value package worth RM100,000, was presented on Thursday (29 January) in Kuala Lumpur. It recognises Bean2Blossom, which composts used coffee grounds from the company’s Auto-Barista machines rather than sending them to landfill.
The company was named National Winner, SME ESG Challenge 2025/2026 (SME Corp Malaysia × UN Global Compact Network Malaysia, Brunei & Cambodia) for Bean2Blossom. It is one of three national winners, alongside Signature Market Sdn Bhd and Anyi Smart Sdn Bhd; the mock cheque is headed “Top 3 Winners of SME ESG Challenge”.
Rizal Nainy, chief executive officer of SME Corp Malaysia, presented the prizes at the UNGCMYB Members Celebration Night 2026, the UN Global Compact network’s members’ event in Kuala Lumpur. The challenge is part of SME Corp Malaysia’s PKSLestari Programme, co-organised with the network.
The night also carried the Forward Faster Sustainability Awards 2026, with the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development listed as a collaborator under the tagline “Stories That Power Change”.
“For us, ESG is not about waiting until we are big. It has to start from day one of operations, with clear intent and discipline,” Raja Ahmad Fauzan, Coffee Star’s founder and chief executive officer, said in a statement.
The company said it runs on a “4P” principle: product, people, planet and profit. Its beans are sustainably sourced and Fairtrade-certified, and it pays wages above the national minimum.
It also says it commits at least five per cent of net profit to social causes and has followed a zero-waste practice since 2024.
Coffee Star is a brand of Belcoff Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd, based in Shah Alam, Selangor. The brand was founded in 2020 by Raja Ahmad Fauzan, who remains its chief executive officer. It operates more than 114 Auto-Barista locations across Malaysia, in offices, hospitals, universities and airports.
The Auto-Barista machines are supplied to workplaces under the company’s Office Coffee Service, a fully managed monthly subscription with no machine to buy. Each brew leaves spent grounds, which Bean2Blossom collects for composting.
The company serves Puro coffee, which is Fairtrade and organic certified and roasted in Belgium by Miko, a roaster established in 1801. The coffee is Halal-recognised.
The mock cheque held up on stage, made out to Belcoff Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd, is marked “media value equivalent” and cites “outstanding commitment to sustainability and ESG leadership”.
